First Impressions On: Dear Esther
[Released February 14, 2012] On this episode of First Impressions, I take a look at the haunting narrative-focused Dear Esther. This is the retail remake of the original Source engine mod, redone in its own new engine by thechineseroom. In Dear Esther the player takes on the role of a man washed...

![First Impressions On: Sniper Elite V2 [Released May 1, 2012] On this episode of First Impressions, I take a look a the 2012 remake of the 2005 tactical stealth/sniper game set in WW2, Sniper Elite V2. In the game you are an American OSS Sniper deployed to Berlin during the last days of the fall of Nazi Germany, in order to secure German scientists involved with the creation of the V2 rockets. The actual game-play revolves around sneaking around areas of ruined Berlin to take out various Nazi and Soviet officers, both to prevent the Russians from obtaining the scientists and their work, and to retrieve intel from the Nazi's on the locations of the scientists. You spend much of the time patiently crawling around to set up traps (something I'm evidently terrible at) and getting into an ideal sniping position. One of the games neater little features in a bullet cam that follows your better shots, culminating in a brutal display of what exactly your bullet is doing to your targets anatomy. Overall, it's an interesting game that asks you to be stealthy but doesn't overly penalize you for failing to do so.](http://img.youtube.com/vi/MJT8aYGL82Y/2.jpg)
![First Impressions On: Dark Fall Lost Souls [Released December 2009] On this episode of First Impressions, I take a look at the indie point-and-click horror adventure game Dark Fall Lost Souls, the third game in a series. The game focuses around the previous disappearance of a little girl, and you play as The Inspector, who tampered with evidence in her case. You explore locations from the first Dark Fall game, mostly the decrepit Dowertow Train Station and Dowerton Hotel. The controls are fairly simplistic, forcing you to click to even look up or down, or turn around.](http://img.youtube.com/vi/97mFta5FFUQ/2.jpg)
![First Impressions On: Front Mission Evolved [Released September 28, 2010] On this episode of First Impressions, I take a look at the recent third person shooter reboot of the tactical Front Mission series, Front Mission Evolved. The game's only real tie to previous entries in the series is the focus on Wanzers, the Japanese-style bipedal humanoid mechs. However, the transition from grid-based tactical strategy to third-person mech combat seems to have been a rough one. While the mechs themselves control fairly well and are even surprisingly mobile at times, the environments are bland and lacking in any sort of tactical options. You are basically pushed down a linear path into a series of confrontations without much choice. Mech customization, one of the most important parts of a mech game, seems to be fairly lacking, and not nearly deep enough to be particularly interesting. Overall I'd say there are plenty of better options for mech games, like any of the Armored Core games.](http://img.youtube.com/vi/IepoLRO_ohE/2.jpg)
