The requirements for the transformation was to go beyond an ascended saiyan, to increase your strength without reducing speed. He also did it when he got older , when Supreme Kai was introduced. The electricity going around their aura, in the original series, meant that they had turned SSJ2(Unless they had super long blonde hair, which is SSJ3) It's the same thing Vegeta did when Babidi mind warped him.
